001 – Circular Floor Pattern

Hello to all my Xzistor LAB Innovator Level patrons!

In this first Tip of the Week I have included 2 files that should come in handy (see below). These files I used when I had my Learning Confine floor pattern printed. You can adjust them to suit your own design but please avoid these two errors:

1.) Do not make the outer BLACK line thinner than mine. The reason for this is that when the Robot is moving at speed and reaches the BLACK line there might be a slight delay in stopping due to program latencies. The thicker line allows enough time for the Robot to prevent it from speeding over the BLACK line and crashing into the confine wall.

2.) Do not neglect to leave space between your outer BLACK line and your physical Learning Confine wall. When you have your Robot’s arms stretched out in front of him/her/it or carrying objects, you want some space for it to maneuver.

The BLACK, YELLOW and GREEN circular patches you can use to teach your robot to navigate to ‘objects’ or interact with them e.g. GREEN could be the ‘food source’ your Robot needs to find.

I do suggest you stick with the Learning Confine dimensions I have provided in the Build Your Own AI Lab.

Also, I suggest you print your floor pattern on the heaviest grain paper you can get…I recall my printing supplier suggested poster paper between 130 – 180 gsm (‘Grams per Square Meter’) and I went for 180 gsm. Even after a few years and with Troopy running around like crazy (and dragging its rear castor wheel over the paper) – it is still perfectly fine!

While we are at it…I built my whole installation by putting 2 cheap IKEA tables next to each other:

SUPPLIER: IKEA

TYPE: Table

COLOUR: White

NAME: Linnmon/Adils

CODE: 499.296.39

PRICE: £25

SIZE: 120cm x 60cm

The 2 tables make a nice 120cm x 120cm square work area to put your AI installation on. In fact I got another table like this and placed it adjacent to the other two to place my laptop on. It really works well! Well, I hope that was helpful! Good luck and enjoy building your AI lab!
